Restore Knee Stability After a Posterior Cruciate Ligament Injury — Through Keyhole Surgery
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is the strongest ligament in the knee — but when it tears, the knee loses its back-stop, and even simple things like walking down stairs, slowing down, or driving can become painful and unstable.
At our clinic, we offer advanced arthroscopic PCL reconstruction in Hyderabad, performed by Dr Karthik Rao — a fellowship-trained orthopaedic and sports injury specialist. Whether your PCL injury was caused by a road traffic accident, a sports injury, or a workplace fall, our minimally invasive approach is designed to restore full knee stability and get you back to an active, confident life.

The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is one of the four main ligaments of the knee. It sits in the centre of the joint and prevents the shin bone (tibia) from sliding backwards under the thigh bone (femur). The PCL is the strongest ligament in the knee — which is why a PCL tear usually means a high-energy injury.
Without a working PCL, the knee feels unstable when going down stairs or slopes, slowing from a run, or carrying loads — and the cartilage and meniscus are at much higher risk of damage.
Both are central knee ligaments, but they tear in very different ways:
PCL tears are less common than ACL tears, but they are often missed initially because the symptoms can be subtle in the early stages.
If you have any of these symptoms — especially after a road traffic accident or a hard fall — please come in for an evaluation. PCL tears that are missed early can cause progressive cartilage damage.
No. Treatment depends on the grade of the tear and the patient’s needs.
Arthroscopic PCL reconstruction is a minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery in which we replace the torn PCL with a new ligament — a graft taken either from your own body (autograft) or from a tissue bank (allograft). Using a high-definition arthroscope, we position the new graft exactly where the original PCL sat and fix it securely with bio-compatible screws or buttons.
Key advantages of arthroscopic PCL surgery:
PCL recovery is slower and more careful than ACL recovery — the graft needs longer protection. Following the rehab programme exactly is essential for a stable, strong knee.
The cost of arthroscopic PCL reconstruction in Hyderabad depends on:
Estimated Cost Range: ₹1.5 Lakhs to ₹3 Lakhs (indicative; multi-ligament cases higher).
*We share the final cost after your evaluation. Cashless insurance and EMI options are available with all major providers.
Yes — partial PCL tears (Grade 1 and 2) often heal with bracing and physiotherapy. Complete (Grade 3) tears, especially with instability or associated injuries, usually need surgical reconstruction.
ACL tears usually happen with twisting injuries; PCL tears usually happen with direct impact to the front of a bent knee — like hitting the dashboard in a car accident. PCL tears tend to be missed initially and need a careful clinical examination plus an MRI for diagnosis.
The PCL graft heals against gravity and is exposed to forces that try to pull the shin bone backwards. To protect the graft, we use a longer brace period and a more gradual rehabilitation programme.
Yes. With proper surgery and disciplined rehabilitation, the vast majority of our patients return to their pre-injury level of sport — typically within 9–12 months.
Pain is well-controlled with modern anaesthesia, nerve blocks, and post-operative medication. Most of our patients are surprised at how manageable the pain is.
Most isolated PCL reconstructions involve a 1–2 night stay. Multi-ligament cases may need a slightly longer stay.
We are equipped to handle complex multi-ligament knee injuries (PCL + ACL, MCL, LCL, posterolateral corner). These cases are best treated by an experienced surgeon, ideally within 3 weeks of the injury for the best results.
Yes. Almost all major insurance providers cover PCL reconstruction surgery. We offer cashless and EMI options to make the process easy for you.
If you have ongoing knee pain, instability, or a ‘lagging’ feeling after a road accident, fall, or sports injury, please do not delay. PCL tears are often missed early — and the sooner we diagnose and treat them, the better your long-term outcome will be.
